Ratargul Swamp Forest is a freshwater swamp forest located in Gowain River, Fatehpur Union, Gowainghat, Sylhet, Bangladesh. It is the only swamp forest located in Bangladesh and one of the few freshwater swamp forests in the world.

How to reach:

There are direct flights from Dhaka to Sylhet .Buses can also be taken from Kalabagan bus stop, Dhaka (AC coach tickets cost 1500bdt one way and must be bought in advance).You can also hire a car from Dhaka for the whole trip which will cost too much and I wouldn’t suggest that.

Arrive in Sylhet and reach your hotel or resort to stay for a couple of days. (Book in advance).

Shuktara Nature retreat is one of the places I stayed . (www.shuktararetreat.com);

there is also Rose view hotel and few 3* hotels (check booking.com and hotels.com for budget hotels in sylhet)

Once you are in sylhet you can easily hire a car to reach Gowainghat which is the starting point of Ratargul Swamp forest.

Hotel management can arrange it for you but they might charge you a bit extra .Otherwise you can visit the train station and check the car rentals inside the station premises.Rentals start from 4000bdt for a round trip to Ratargul Swamp forest.Bargain and don’t exceed over 5000bdt.If this is your first time in Bangladesh then take help from the hotel management.

It takes around 2 hours to reach Ratargul depending on the weather and traffic. So make sure you leave the hotel by 10am.Take lunch with you, as there’s no option of heavy food.Tea and light snacks are available.You’ll not find toilets , but there is a village nearby to go in during emergency.

Reach Gowainghat haor and that’s where your car rests.(don’t pay the driver until you reach the hotel at the end of your trip).

Once you reach Gowainghat haor you need to hire a boat for the swamp visit.Each boat Costs between 1200bdt-1400bdt and can take 4 adults easily.Carry hats and umbrellas.

Then you enter into the magical wilderness of the Ratargul Swamp forest. It’s safe and highly recommended for nature lovers.Carry cameras for photographs as it’s really hard to find so much green these days.

Don’t get into the water, you may encounter monitor lizards and other water mammals but they don’t harm.

I guarantee you that this trip will help you to get rid from the toxicity of monotonous energy.Try to travel in a group for more fun and you can ask the boatman to sing for you, they don’t sing really good but they do it from their heart.
